Care after laser hair removal. How to avoid irritation and discoloration

Laser hair removal works through photothermolysis: laser energy absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle turns into heat. Part of this heat always reaches the surrounding skin — hence the erythema, perifollicular papules and burning sensation that in some patients persist longer than a few hours.
The good news: it is a serial treatment (6–8 sessions), so a clinic that takes care of the patient's skin between sessions builds a relationship for the whole year — and a natural opportunity to resell home care.
Immediately after the treatment
Skin after laser hair removal is overheated and reddened, especially in areas with thinner skin (bikini, armpits, face). The priority: thermal cooling and antioxidant calming of the inflammatory response.
- an antioxidant mist applied touch-free to the treated areas
- loose, breathable clothing — friction sustains irritation
- cool (not icy) indirect compresses for stronger erythema
- no alcohol-based deodorants on epilated armpits for 24–48 h
The first week: protection against discoloration
The most common complication of laser hair removal is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — almost always the result of sun exposure too soon after the treatment. SPF 50+ photoprotection on exposed areas for at least 2 weeks is a requirement, not a recommendation.
Antioxidant support has a double role here: biological fullerenes neutralise the free radicals generated both by the laser energy and by UV radiation — limiting the inflammatory cascade that leads to discoloration.
Between sessions
Between treatments the skin should return to full balance — this is the condition for safely raising the parameters at the next session. A patient with calmed, well-hydrated skin is a patient whose therapy proceeds faster and more effectively.
AURONN® partner clinics receive a protocol for laser therapies together with printable home recommendations. Cooperation can start with the “Test for 1 PLN” programme.
Frequently asked questions
What to avoid after laser hair removal?
For 48 hours: hot baths, sauna, swimming pool, intense workouts and cosmetics with alcohol. For 2 weeks: sun exposure without SPF 50+ and self-tanners on the treated areas.
How long does erythema last after laser hair removal?
Usually from a few hours to 1–2 days. Antioxidant support and avoiding friction shorten this time. Erythema lasting more than 72 hours is worth consulting with the clinic that performed the treatment.
What to use on skin after laser hair removal?
Light, fragrance-free soothing preparations applied touch-free — e.g. a mist with antioxidants (biological fullerenes neutralise the free radicals caused by the laser energy) — and SPF 50+ photoprotection on exposed areas.
