The science behind the brand

Fullerenes — the molecule
that won a Nobel Prize.

Fullerenes are spherical carbon molecules discovered in 1985. Their discovery earned the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Today their biological form goes into AURONN® cosmetics — as the strongest known antioxidant in skin care.

Why antioxidants

Oxidative stress is your skin's silent adversary.

UV radiation, pollution, stress and aesthetic procedures generate free radicals — molecules that damage collagen, lipids and cellular DNA. Antioxidants neutralise them. Fullerenes do it many times more effectively, because a single cage works many times over instead of being used up in one reaction.

Definition

What are biological fullerenes and why are they the strongest antioxidant?

Biological fullerenes are spherical carbon molecules with a structure resembling a football, built from 60 carbon atoms. They were discovered in 1985 by Harold Kroto, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley, and in 1996 the discovery was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In skin care fullerenes act as an antioxidant of exceptional capacity: classic antioxidants such as vitamins C or E are used up after a single reaction with a free radical, whereas a fullerene cage can deactivate up to 34 radicals at once and keep working.

In studies of antioxidant activity, fullerenes reached results up to 172 times higher than vitamin C and up to 240 times higher than vitamin E. The biological form used in AURONN® cosmetics is produced through biotechnological processes and — unlike synthetic C₆₀ — shows high biocompatibility. That is why they are considered the strongest antioxidant available in skin care.

Mechanism of action

How fullerenes work in the skin.

  1. 01

    Absorption into the stratum corneum

Micro-particles of biological fullerenes (≤1 nm) penetrate the stratum corneum within tens of seconds, bypassing the hydrolipid barrier without disrupting it.

  2. 02

    Capturing free radicals

Each fullerene cage deactivates up to 34 radicals at once — a mechanism 172× stronger than vitamin C and 240× stronger than vitamin E.

  3. 03

    Protecting lipids and cells

Fullerenes protect cell-membrane lipids from oxidation, limiting oxidative stress — one of the main causes of skin ageing.

  4. 04

    Return to homeostasis

The skin gains better conditions for natural regeneration: improved hydration, a stronger barrier and greater comfort — in line with the longevity philosophy.

“Biological fullerenes are an advanced, biology-based technology that supports protection against oxidative stress and natural regenerative processes. They are a modern element of post-treatment care and everyday skin support, in line with the longevity philosophy.”

Frequently asked questions

Questions about fullerenes.

What are biological fullerenes?

Biological fullerenes are spherical carbon molecules built from 60 atoms, discovered in 1985 by Harold Kroto, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley — and honoured with the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. AURONN® cosmetics use their biological form, produced through biotechnological processes, acting as an antioxidant of exceptional capacity.

How do biological fullerenes differ from synthetic C₆₀?

Synthetic C₆₀ fullerene is produced in the lab and has high chemical purity. Biological fullerenes form naturally through biotechnological processes and show high biocompatibility with the skin.

Are fullerenes in cosmetics safe?

AURONN® cosmetics undergo the safety assessments for cosmetic products required in the European Union. The biological form of fullerenes used in them shows high biocompatibility.

Where do the 172× and 240× figures come from?

They are results of studies on the antioxidant activity of fullerenes, in which the molecule reached free-radical capture up to 172 times higher than vitamin C and up to 240 times higher than vitamin E. The studies concern the fullerene molecule itself.

Where can I buy AURONN® cosmetics?
